Like her book, the author is hard to categorize; by the time of her death in 1850 at age 40, Sarah Margaret Fuller was: an acclaimed journalist, controversial critic, reluctant transcendentalist, early feminist, accomplished author, unprecedented female foreign correspondent, and new mother. Summer on the Lakes in 1843 is an eclectic collection of observations, poems, and anecdotes chronicling Ms. Fuller’s solo journey through the great lakes region of North America in the middle of the 19th century at the age of 33. Reading this mental sketchbook is like having a conversation with a bright, educated and strong-willed young person about everything from "Indians", to the natural world, to the people, both ordinary and extraordinary, who cross her path. It’s fascinating to listen to a mind so far ahead of its time, for example, in understanding the plight of Native Americans and the effects of environmental changes brought about by the expansion of “civilization”, and yet still such a product of its time in its Eurocentric world view. For me, the book is an enlightening glimpse at how a superior intellect saw the world in 1843.A word about the quality of the printing: as it says on the third page, the book “…represents an authentic reproduction of the text as printed by the original publisher.” It looks like it is produced from microfiche; it is very clearly readable, in fact the large font is easy on the eye, but there are a handful of pages (perhaps three or four) where the text is lost, and none of the hand drawn pictures, of which there are very few, are legible at all.

This book includes more than the author's journal of her summer on the lakes. In it are some of her poems, essays, communications with friends, and writings of others. I particularly enjoyed the description of her lake trip describing the Chicago area in 1843 when it was a small settlement. She also visited Mackinac Island and told of the great Indian gathering there. Her outlook on education, pioneering, and other topics is quite modern for her day, explaining why she faced such opposition to her views. Overall, an engaging read.

The table of contents and overall electronic formatting and editing are well done in this edition of "Summer on the Lakes, in 1843", however, the edition does not contain any of the illustrations from the printed versions. I believe these are necessary in order for the reader to grasp the entire personality of this journalistic-style work.
I was interested in the writings of this Transcendentalist author, but it seemed to be mostly travelogue. Interesting to see viewpoints from this year.
